The Department of Foreign Relations (DBB) is the focal point in communication between the Government of Sint
Maarten, Governments of other countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague and between the
Government of Sint Maarten and international organizations. The Department of Foreign Relations coordinates and
implements Sint Maarten’s foreign policy. In addition, the Department of Foreign Relations operates in
collaboration with embassies and consulates-general of the Kingdom, especially in the region, and representatives
of other countries in the Kingdom. The Department of Foreign Relations falls under the Ministry of General Affairs
and is looking for a:
Senior Policy Advisor
Job Requirements
The Senior Policy Advisor is chiefly responsible for policy analysis and development in broad and complex subject
areas. You will draw up policy plans with other ministries, prepare activities, and monitor the progress of
implementation to ensure international interests are secured and obligations met. You will research global political
developments and their implication for Sint Maarten, advise on strategies to the government and other ministries,
prepare relevant briefing and speaking notes and speeches, support and/or represent Sint Maarten locally and
abroad in technical, ministerial, and Kingdom delegations. To this end, you maintain close contact with the
ministries of Sint Maarten, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao, Dutch Embassies,
international organizations, and embassies and/or governments of other countries.
Knowledge and Skills
▪ University degree in international relations, political science, politics, international law, or related field;
▪ Persons with the following professional and/or educational backgrounds are preferred: treaties, legal, foreign/
international relations, diplomacy;
▪ Experience in research and analysis, advising, and policy development and harmonization;
▪ Skilled in estimating the administrative relations and the administrative/political and technical feasibility
of advice and proposals and the related decision-making circuits and sensitivities;
▪ High level of adaptability, discernment, discretion, as well as understanding of geopolitics and Kingdom
dynamics;
▪ Ability to operate independently as well as in a team, across all levels of an organization;
▪ Affinity with the Dutch Kingdom structure;
▪ Affinity with local socio-economic developments and internal government structure;
▪ Possess political sensitivity;
▪ Knowledge and/or experience working with international relations;
▪ Strategic and innovative thinker;
▪ Excellent communication and presentation skills;
▪ The ideal candidate has a demonstratable interest in the subject area with relevant experience. They can
work accurately and at the same time quickly, as well as possess the ability to coordinate well and oversee
all action points;
▪ Excellent speaking and writing skills in English, good command of the Dutch language, French and Spanish a
bonus.
Salary
The salary depends on your education and work experience and is a minimum of NAf. 5.092,00 and a maximum of
NAf. 9.821,00.
